Chris Pratt singled himself out as a talent to watch after playing Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation, though he's since become a Hollywood megastar after taking on lead roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, and Jurassic World franchises.
In animation, Pratt has also made his mark after lending his voice to The LEGO Movie, Pixar's Onward and, perhaps most controversially, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Pratt would prove the haters wrong with his take on the iconic Nintendo character, though the video game icon isn't the only household name he's set to bring to life on screen. Next up? Everyone's favourite lasagne-loving cat, Garfield.
Sony Pictures has just released the first trailer for the Garfield movie, and it introduces us to Baby Garfield (move over Baby Groot and Baby Yoda). The character's father - played by Samuel L. Jackson - also appears, as do franchise icons Jonathan and Odie. Like Mario, Pratt's Garfield sounds like, well, Chris Pratt; some will be happy about that, while others likely won't.
"Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt), the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat, is about to have a wild outdoor adventure!" reads the official synopsis. "After an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father - scruffy street cat Vic (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson) - Garfield and his canine friend Odie are forced from their perfectly pampered life into joining Vic in a hilarious, high-stakes heist."
The movie is directed by Mark Dindal from a screenplay by Paul A. Kaplan & Mark Torgove and David Reynolds and is based on the Garfield characters created by Jim Davis. Alongside Pratt and Jackson, the cast also includes Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein, and Bowen Yang.
Last year, the Guardians of the Galaxy star took to Twitter/X to tease the project and said, "Get ready for some Garfield! Coming to theaters on President’s Day weekend 2024. Finally, a Monday you’re not going to hate! I have been deep in research on this one. Mostly eating lasagna. But also licking myself clean."
The release date has obviously shifted from February 19, though, as social media posts for the U.S. version of the trailer lists Garfield as "Coming Soon" next summer. However, the UK version uploaded to YouTube lists May 24 as the movie's release date.
