With Pixar's Elemental hitting theaters this week, the studio has already begun teasing its next movie. Elio will be Pixar's 28th feature film, and it looks to be an out-of-this-world adventure. Literally.
The film is named after the main protagonist, a young boy with an active imagination, but unable to fit in. His mother, Olga, helps run a top-secret military organization tasked with trying to communicate with alien life. When she unexpectedly receives a response to "give us your leader," an ill-timed phone call from her son results in Elio getting zapped up to the Communiverse where he is mistakenly identified by an interplanetary organization as Earth's ambassador. Believed to be Earth's leader, Elio must complete a series of formidable trials.
In typical Pixar fashion, Elio looks like a film filled with fantastical wonder and inspiring adventure. And no doubt there will be a heartwarming lesson as Elio discovers "who he is truly meant to be."
Elio is directed by Adrian Molina, the screenwriter and co-director of Coco. The cast features the voices of the film features the voices of America Ferrera (Barbie) as Elio’s mom, Olga; Jameela Jamil (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) as Ambassador Questa; Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) as Ambassador Grigon; and Yonas Kibreab (Sweet Tooth) as the title character.
For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers—in Disney and Pixar’s all-new movie “Elio,” the universe calls back! The original feature film introduces Elio, an underdog with an active imagination who finds himself inadvertently beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide. Mistakenly identified as Earth’s ambassador to the rest of the universe, and completely unprepared for that kind of pressure, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, survive a series of formidable trials and somehow discover who he is truly meant to be.
Elio is slated to arrive in theaters on March 1, 2024. In the meantime, Disney will hope to reverse its box office misfortunes with the upcoming release of Pixar's Elemental. The latest film arrives in theaters this Friday, June 16, and comes on the heels of multiple box office disappointments from Pixar in Lightyear and Turning Red.
