Emilio Estevez is lacing up his skates once again and returning to the ice in the Disney+ original series, The Mighty Ducks. Estevez was rumored to be returning to his iconic role as beloved Coach Gordon Bombay, but the official announcement was made today.

“Once a Duck, always a Duck!,” Emilio Estevez said in a statement alongside a press release detailing the new series, “and after 25 years, I am delighted to lace up my skates, put on Coach Bombay's jacket and return to play the iconic character for this new chapter in ‘The Mighty Ducks’ franchise.  Likewise, I am thrilled to return to my old stomping grounds with my friends at Disney and Steve Brill, the original creator of the franchise, to join them on their exciting new platform, Disney+.”

Disney+ celebrated his return with production photos that show Estevez laced up and on the ice. A second photo shows him posing with what looks to be his new team of scrappy players. Estevez joins previously announced series regulars Lauren Graham (Alex) and Brady Noon (Evan), who play a mother-son combo who seek to start their own ragtag team after Evan is unceremoniously cut by the now ultra-competitive Mighty Ducks.

Based on the popular '90s franchise, The Mighty Ducks series will serve as a sort of sequel reboot. Steve Brill, the original creator, writer, and executive producer of all three films, is back as co-creator and executive producer of the series. The synopsis reads:

In present day Minnesota, the Mighty Ducks have evolved from scrappy underdogs to an ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team. After 12-year-old Evan (Noon) is unceremoniously cut from the Ducks, he and his mom Alex (Graham) set out to build their own ragtag team of misfits to challenge the cutthroat, win-at-all-costs culture of competitive youth sports. With the help of Gordon Bombay (Estevez), they discover the joys of playing just for the love of the game.

In addition to returning as Coach Bombay, Estevez will also serve as an executive producer alongside James Griffiths and Michael Spiller. The 10-episode series will premiere on Disney+ later this year.
