Jon Favreau's
The Lion King hits theaters next month and if presale tickets are any indication, Disney has another hit on its hands. Advance tickets for the upcoming live-action adaptation went on sale yesterday, and it's already hitting some incredible milestones on Fandango and Atom Tickets, two prominant online movie ticketing companies.
For Fandango,
The Lion King trails only
Avengers: Endgame for best first-day ticket sales of 2019. But it's also the ticket' sellers best first-day presales for a Disney movie outside of the Star Wars or Marvel franchises. It has topped 2017's
Beauty and the Beast and this year's
Aladdin to become the best-selling Disney adaptation in the first 24 hours.
Beauty and the Beast went on to gross over $500M domestically ($1.2B worldwide), while Aladdin sits at $290M domestically ($815M worldwide), so things are looking pretty positive for
The Lion King.
Meanwhile, over on Atom Tickets, The Lion King has become the best pre-selling family movie, topping
Toy Story 4,
Aladdin,
Pokemon Detective Pikachu and
Shazam. The film has also sold a whopping four times more tickets than Aladdin did on Atom in the first 24 hours.
The Lion King's first two hours of pre-sales on Atam Tickets also outpaded Marvel’s
Black Panther,
Captain Marvel and
Ant-Man & the Wasp in the same time period.
Director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. The all-star cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon.
The Lion King hits theaters July 19, 2019.
