After the success of
Crazy Rich Asians, Adele Lim has become one of Hollywood's hottest screenwriters. As she works on a sequel to
Crazy Rich Asians and other projects, Disney has hired her to write the script for the unannounced animated feature.
While plot details for the movie are being kept under wraps,
Deadline reports that Disney story artists Paul Briggs (
Frozen) and Dean Wellins (
Zootopia) will be making their directorial debuts on the project. Additionally, the story has an Asian element running through it and a female protagonist.
Furthermore, it is a theatrical feature rather than one made specifically for Disney's upcoming streaming service. Casting is currently underway for the lead role.
Shurer has impressive animation credentials having previously headed Pixar's short films output. She also produced Disney's Oscar-nominated
Moana which grossed over $640 million at the worldwide box office. It's speculated that unlike
Moana, this untitled film will not have a musical element.
As for the directors, Briggs was a story artist on
Zootopia and
Tangled and head of story on
Big Hero Six and
Frozen. He also did voice work on both movies. Wellins was a story artist on
Zootopia,
Big Hero Six and
Tangled.
We'll bring you further details on this project as soon as we know more.
