Detective Pikachu is set to release in May of this year and thus far we've only gotten one trailer. Albeit that trailer does feature an exciting amount of Pokemon content but is scarce in terms of story. We have our heroes set up in the titular Pikachu and Justice Smith's character Tim Goodman, but who's our villain? Well, apparently We Got This Covered have got the scoop.

According to the site's new report, Mewtwo will be an antagonist of the upcoming movie. Detective Pikachu will apparently feature Mewtwo's origin. However, the fan-favourite Pokemon won't be the main antagonist, according to this source, that title belongs to a "human villain" intent on controlling Mewtwo.

Mewtwo served as the villain of the Pokemon: The First Movie back in 1998 -  there's also a Mewtwo-centric animated movie set to release this year. Mewtwo's contempt for humanity was born on-account of Team Rocket's attempts to control it. Are these just interesting parallels, or will Team Rocket perhaps make their presence known in Detective Pikachu? We'll just have to wait until May 10th to find out.

What do you think of Mewtwo reportedly being the villain of Detective Pikachu? Are you looking forward to the live-action Pokemon movie?

Detective Pikachu is set to arrive in theatres on May 10th, 2019.
