Basketball player Kobe Bryant's reputation was tarnished a few years ago when disturbing rape allegations were levelled against him. After last year's triumphs in the #MeToo movement, a group calling itself Women and Allies in conjunction with figures in the animation community, have worked tirelessly to ensure that Mr. Bryant will not participate in this year's Animation Is Film (AIF) festival in Los Angeles.
In the last 48 hours, Kobe Bryant's name has been removed from the festival's website. No reason for his absence has been given.
A petition launched by Women and Allies calling for Bryant's removal can be read below:
In light of the #MeToo movement, there has been little to no recourse for Kobe Bryant’s actions of sexual assault. We demand that GKIDS, Variety, & Annecy revoke their complicity in enabling a sexual predator to continue a life without any accountability both as an individual and a celebrity.…This is an urgent time to say NO to toxic and violent behavior against women. For this reason, we ask that GKIDS, Variety & Annecy take a stand in support of women. Keeping Kobe Bryant on the jury sets a precedent of lenience for sexual criminals and further undermines the visibility and respect that victims of harassment and assault deserve.
The petition appears to have achieved the desired result.
January's petition failed to prevent Kobe from winning an Oscar in spite of the 17,000 signatures garnered.
Bryant's removal from the festival ensures that the focus will be on the promising new animated films and not the controversy his presence will bring. In addition to the
Academy preventing Bryant from joining its ranks, these gestures send a clear message that harmful behavior will no longer be tolerated in the animation community.
