We've seen lots of animated Barbie movies over the years (the iconic doll even played a role in the Toy Story franchise), but a live-action project from Warner Bros. and Mattel has been in the works for some time now.
After initially eyeing Amy Schumer to play the title character, the studio turned to Margot Robbie (The Suicide Squad) to put her spin on one of the world's most iconic toys. Greta Gerwig (Little Women) was already attached to direct the movie, of course, and co-wrote the project with her husband Noah Baumbach.
Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049) has been cast as Ken, while Will Ferrell (Anchorman) signed up to play the CEO of a toy company (widely believed to be a spin on Mattel). Other cast members include Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, and Kate McKinnon.
So, yeah, it's a stacked cast!
Now, we have a new synopsis for the movie that, while brief, offers an idea of what to expect from Barbie.
"A doll living in Barbieland is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world," it teases, lining up with what we've heard about the movie in recent months.
It's been a while now since that first trailer broke the internet, though set photos from the movie have pointed to it being a neon-soaked delight. We're sure another sneak peek is imminent and given that all-star cast and the brand recognition Barbie has, something tells us this could be one of the year's biggest hits.
Robbie previously teased, "Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, 'Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,' but our goal is to be like, 'Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different - the thing you didn’t know you wanted...'"
Barbie will arrive in theaters on July 21, 2023.
