A new trailer for Barbie has been released, and we may finally have an idea of what to expect from filmmaker Greta Gerwig's long-awaited big screen take on the iconic doll.
It appears Margot Robbie's Barbie will escape to the real world alongside Ryan Gosling's Ken, though not everyone is happy about them no longer being in Barbieland. Will Ferrell's villainous Mattel CEO wants to put Barbie back in her box, and all signs point to the movie being both hilarious and empowering in equal measure.
Gerwig appears to be channelling her inner Wes Anderson at times, while the star-studded cast is definitely having fun.
The epic ensemble includes John Cena, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Michael Cera, Issa Rae, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Kate McKinnon, Dua Lipa and Helen Mirren.
"To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place," reads the movie's brief synopsis. "Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken."
There have been many animated Barbie movies over the years (the iconic doll even played a role in the Toy Story franchise), but the upcoming live-action effort from Warner Bros. and Mattel has been in the works for some time. Amy Schumer was once attached to play the title character before a change in direction saw Robbie take over the role.
The movie has already become something of a viral sensation between the set photos and teaser trailers, and we're sure this latest sneak peek will only serve to build anticipation. Honestly, this has the potential to be one of the year's most unique and dazzling hits if what we see here is any indication!
Barbie will arrive in theaters on July 21, later this year.
