SpongeBob Squarepants will be making a return to the big screen in 2020 with
The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge.
The animated movie recently added Awkwafina and Reggie Watts to its cast. You'll recognise the former from
Oceans 8 and
Crazy Rich Asians, while the latter is a musical comedian best known for regularly appearing on
The Late Late Show with James Corden.
Thanks to a recent report by
The Hollywood Reporter, we know that
The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge will be a mixture of hand-drawn and computer-generated animation - unlike the last
SpongeBob movie which was entirely CG. Hans Zimmer is at the helm of the film's score. And the film will feature an original song by Ali Dee.
According to Mireille Soria, the president of Paramount Animation, the film will be an origin story and similar to
It's a Wonderful Life.
"For the first time ever, we're going to get to the origin of how little SpongeBob met the rest of the Bikini Bottom gang at summer camp. The film's opening will take place at Camp Coral when all of our favorite characters meet for the first time," Soria stated at the VIEW Conference.
The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge is set to arrive in theatres in July, 2020.
