On Wednesday, Will Smith shared the first teaser poster for
Disney's Aladdin. Smith, who will play the Genie (voiced by Robin Williams in the original animated film), embodied his role in the upcoming live-action remake, teasing "Can't wait for ya'll to see me BLUE!" Unfortunately, it seems we'll have to wait a bit longer.
As promised, Disney released the first teaser trailer for
Aladdin and Smith's Genie is nowhere to be found in it - although we do get a glimpse of his lamp. Despite no Genie, there certainly isn't a lack of magic and wonder in the teaser. Literally, we get to see the Cave of Wonders as it calls for "a diamond in the rough."
Of course, anyone familiar with the story of
Aladdin knows who that already is. And if you haven't seen the original cartoon, well, I won't spoil anything for you but I'm sure you can figure it out.
“Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, the film is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s “Aladdin.”
In addition to Will Smith as the Genie,
Aladdin also stars Mena Massoud as the scoundrel street rat Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine, the beautiful, self-determined princess; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, the powerful sorcerer; and Navid Negahban as the Sultan concerned with his daughter’s future. The talented cast is rounded out by Nasim Pedrad as Dalia, Princess Jasmine’s free-spirited best friend and confidante; Billy Magnussen as the handsome and arrogant suitor Prince Anders; and Numan Acar as Hakim, Jafar’s right-hand man and captain of the palace guards.
Aladdin arrives in theaters on May 24, 2019.
