The newest animated movie of both DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studios is now in theatres.
Abominable made its debut with a $5.7 million opening on Friday and knocked the
Downton Abbey movie down to the second spot on the charts (via
Box Office Mojo).
It was predicted by industry experts that
Abominable would make between $17 million and $20 million during its opening weekend. The animated movie has exceeded that, making a total of $20.9 million. It's not a hugely impressive sum but it has placed
Abominable in the top spot.
Downton Abbey,
Hustlers, and
IT Chapter Two follow behind in the charts — in that respective order.
Abominable is directed by Jill Culton (
Open Season) and stars Chloe Bennet (
Marvel's Agents of S.H.E.L.D.) as a teenage girl who lives in modern day Shanghai. One day, Yi discovers a young and lost yeti atop the roof of her apartment building and promptly decides to make it her and her friends' mission to reunite Everest, as they call it, with its family atop the highest point on Earth.
As well as Bennet, the cast of
Abominable also includes Albert Tsai, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Eddie Izzard, Sarah Paulson, Tsai Chin and Michelle Wong.
When teenage Yi (Chloe Bennet, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, she and her mischievous friends, Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai), name him “Everest” and embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth.
