According to a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter, a live-action adaptation of the 2002 animated classic Lilo & Stitch is in the works at Disney. This is one in a long line of live-action remakes that Disney are developing; Dumbo, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Lady and the Tramp, Aladdin, and more. Similar to all of those, the Lilo & Stitch remake will utilise a mixture of both live-action and CGI.
Producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are apparently already at work on the project - they're also attached to the live-action Aladdin remake. Mike Van Waes is attached to pen the script. Ryan Halprin is co-producing. The original Lilo & Stitch was both written and directed by How To Train Your Dragon's Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders.
Below is the synopsis for the animated film:
A tale of a young girl's close encounter with the galaxy's most wanted extraterrestrial. Lilo is a lonely Hawaiian girl who adopts a small ugly "dog," whom she names Stitch. Stitch would be the perfect pet if he weren't in reality a genetic experiment who has escaped from an alien planet and crash-landed on Earth. Through her love, faith and unwavering belief in ohana, the Hawaiian concept of family, Lilo helps unlock Stitch's heart and gives him the ability to care for someone else.
Lilo & Stitch didn't do too well at the Box Office, its success did warrant multiple direct-to-video sequels and television series - as well as an Oscar nomination for 'Best Animated Feature'. The original voice cast included Daveigh Chase, Tia Carrere, David Ogden Stiers, Kevin McDonald, Ving Rhames, Jason Scott Lee, and Kevin Michael Richardson - it remains to be seen whether any of these names will return for the remake.
