Despite some early concerns that The Little Mermaid had made a smaller-than-expected slash at the box office, it ultimately grossed $542 million worldwide.
That's a solid result, albeit one that's perhaps a little less than Disney would have liked. Unfortunately, it's widely believed the remake underperformed in several international locations due to it featuring a Black lead, a sad reminder of the state of the world today.
On a brighter note, though, it's been announced that this live-action reimagining of Disney's Oscar-winning animated musical classic The Little Mermaid will premiere on Disney+ September 6!
Disney+ subscribers will be able to access special bonus content, including Oscar winner Javier Bardem as King Triton performing the song "Impossible Child" with music by multiple Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast) and lyrics by three-time Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton); "Passing the Dinglehopper," and "Under the Sea - Song Breakdown."
The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric.
While mermaids are forbidden from interacting with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life - and her father’s crown - in jeopardy.
The Little Mermaid stars singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Art Malik as Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, with Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.
