Disney has been including as many callbacks to the original The Little Mermaid as possible in the marketing for Rob Marshall's upcoming live-action reimagining, and the latest cover of Disney Twenty-Three Magazine features star Halle Bailey striking another familiar pose as Ariel.
Though this pose isn't as iconic as the shot of Ariel bursting into song on the rocks, fans of the animated classic are sure to recognize it from the direct-to-DVD sequel, Return to the Sea.
Check out the cover below, along with an alternate version spotlighting Pixar's Elemental.
Bailey stars alongside Meliisa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.
The Little Mermaid will feature music from the animated classic as well as four new songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who previously worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns, will also compose original music for Mermaid along with Alan Menken.
The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
The movie is set to swim into theaters on May 26, 2023.
