Based on the popular children's book series of the same name by Jeff Kinney, specifically the first entry from 2007, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is the newest Disney+ original animated movie.
Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and 20th Century Animation, the new film offers an animated spin on the classic story many will be familiar with if not from the aforementioned book series then from the popular live-action film adaptation that came out back in 2010 and received two sequels.
It's said that this animated adaptation is more faithful to the source material than those films, even down to replicating the illustrations from the books in its art style. Which, albeit, may take a bit of getting used to. The reception to the animated film thus far has been mixed to say the least, though it has ended up with a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than that of the live-action adaptation.
Kinney, the writer of the book series, has already confirmed that at least one follow-up is in the works in the form of an adaptation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (the second entry in the book series). Perhaps each of the books in the series will be getting their own animated adaptation for Disney+. Regardless, the first instalment is now available to stream via the service.
