My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic has joined the inclusive ranks of
Arthur,
Voltron,
She-Ra, and many more modern cartoon series in featuring LGBTQ+ couples.
The most recent episode of the animation series introduced the characters of Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty, as you can guess from their titles, these two are the show's first lesbian couple - as well as its first same-sex couple to begin with. The two are the caretakers of the character Scootaloo.
People recently revealed the details of said episode, which is titled "The Last Crusade," and will air in the US on June 15th on Discovery Family. It has already aired in Europe.
Nicole Dubuc and Josh Haber, the animated show's showrunners had this to say (via
Comicbook.com) about the LGBTQ+ representation:
"I think it’s fantastic that we can show that what truly defines a family is love — that, to me, is the core of My Little Pony. Diversity and representation are important for kids for so many reasons, and it’s my first priority on everything I work on."
