Viacom announced today that a new game show based on Nickelodeon’s wildly popular cartoon franchise SpongeBob SquarePants will launch sometime this year.
Titled SpongeBob Smarty Pants Game Show, the digital game show will feature two SpongeBob superfans competing to win The Golden Pineapple “by answering trivia questions, completing messy stunts and competing in SpongeBob-themed games.”
The series is expected to premiere sometime in 2019 on Facebook and the SpongeBob YouTube channel. Special live episodes of the show will also be broadcast across Nickelodeon’s social accounts.
SpongeBob Squarepants debuted on Nickelodeon in 1999 and has since become the networks’ highest rated series. The media franchise spawned two feature-length films (with a third on the way) and has generated over $13 billion in merchandising revenue. SpongeBob is currently airing its 12th.
The SpongeBob Smarty Pants Game Show is one of multiple new projects on the way from Viacom and Nickelodeon that will be based on the beloved cartoon series.
