The CW has been home to numerous DC Comics series for decades and still is. While fans have been watching the Arrow-Verse, now dubbed the CW-Verse, these iterations of the heroes and villains are far from the first to be seen on the station.
In addition to Arrow coming to an end, the current DC shows on the CW include Flash, Supergirl, Black Lightning, Legends of Tomorrow, Stargirl, Superman & Lois, and Batwoman. Before that, the CW was also home to Birds of Prey and Smallville, with Aquaman and Wonder Woman pilots starring Justin Hartley and Adrienne Palicki never receiving a series order.
Of the past shows on the station, Smallville is arguably one of the biggest and most beloved. While some fans may think it pales compared to some of the Arrow-verse shows, for ten years, the Superman-centric series focused on his adolescence.
Smallville lasted for ten seasons and starred Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor, Erica Durance as Lois Lane, and Tom Welling as the future Man of Steel. Although it came to an end a decade ago, it looks as though a few of the stars are still pushing for it to continue in the form of an animated series.
The idea isn't too far out of the realm of possibilities. Finished shows like Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have continued in the comic book medium. The CW has already released animated shows in their CW-Verse such as Vixen and Freedom Fighters: The Ray.
Although it was mentioned to be in the works back in 2018, Michael Rosenbaum recently shared an update via an Instagram Q&A. He confirmed that he and Welling are still hoping to get the animated series off of the ground. Check out what Rosenbaum had to say for yourself below.
“Well, Tom Welling and I had the idea of Smallville returning as an animated series, so we’ll see if it ever happens, but we’ll try and get that going.”
