Fans had been expecting something related to the Lunar New Year to pop up in Niantic's mobile game soon since the official
Pokémon Go twitter accountrecently started tweeting cryptic images of moons.
The Year of the Rat is being represented by the mobile game and red creatures are getting the spotlight. On Friday the 24th the features kicked in and they will continue to run until Friday, February 3rd at 1 pm PST. With the celebration of red Pokémon, their spawn rate is increased, including Charmeleon, Parasect, Vulpix, Voltorb, Magmar, Jynx, Slugma, Magikarp, Wurmple, Foongus, Corphish, and Kriketot, and most importantly - Red Gyarados.
Most fans are aware of this shiny version's red shade due to its appearance in
Pokémon Gold and
Silver, but the creature is a tough one to collect regularly, let alone its shiny verion, particularly with the 400 candy requirement to evolve Magikarp. As such, even trainers who already have this shiny version are likely to be on the lookout for the creatures during this increased spawn event.
Regarding the new Pokémon, both Darumaka and Minccino have joined
Pokémon Go with the former currently hatching from 7 km eggs and the latter coming alongside limited research. Take a look at the images below to get a glimpse of Darumaka and Minccino from left to right.
In addition to looking at the new creatures you can capture, you can see the full range of features that
