Gremlins released back in 1984 and a sequel followed that up in 1990. The franchise has been lying dormant since then but is on track for a comeback as a Gremlins animated series is in the works for the HBO Max streaming service.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will take place decades before the events of the aforementioned movies — in the 1920s Shanghai to be specific. Remember the shop owner from the 1984 movie who entrusted Billy with Gizmo? Well, the series will focus on him as a young boy first meeting Gizmo.

Alongside a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo will venture through the Chinese countryside and encounter colourful monsters and spirits of Chinese folklore. One their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover legendary treasure, Sam and Elle are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his army of evil Gremlins.

Thanks to a new report by Collider, we now know that the Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai animated series will debut on Warner Bros.' streaming service in 2021. It's mentioned that they're unsure of exactly when during 2021 but they're at least certain that it's on track for next year.
