Alex Hirsch, creator of the hit animated show
Gravity Falls, has signed a multi-year deal with Netflix and will exclusively developer new series and features for the streaming service. Details regarding the series and features remain under wraps, but given Hirsch's history, it's likely the project will involve animation.
“Alex is an imaginative storyteller with new ideas who’s quickly developed a reputation as a fresh new voice in animation,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content for Netflix.
“We couldn’t be more excited to work with him as we continue expanding our adult animated slate.”
Hirsch added: “I couldn’t be more excited to join the amazing roster of talent coming to Netflix. Plus it couldn’t hurt to be on The Algorithm’s good side before The Singularity hits. Awesome things are coming!”
A writer, director, producer, and author, Hirsch is best known for creating and voicing the hit animated series Gravity Falls. The show followed the adventures of Dipper Pins and his twin sister Mabel, who are sent to the fictitious Gravity Falls, Roadkill County, Oregon, a town full of paranormal forces and supernatural creatures. The two spend the summer working with their Great Uncle Stan Pines who runs a tourist trap called the Mystery Shack. When Dipper finds a mysterious journal in the woods, they begin unraveling the local mysteries of the town.
Gravity Falls received universal acclaim but ran for only two seasons on Disney XD. Commenting on the surprisingly short run, Hirsch said he wanted the show to end with "a real conclusion for the characters." Hirsch has remained open to continuing the series with additional episodes or specials, but that looks highly unlikely now given his new deal with Netflix. Fans can continue the story of Gravity Falls through the graphic novel, Gravity Falls: Lost Legends.
