Following the successful revival of the Ghostbusters franchise with 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Sony pictures is looking to continue the ghostbusting adventures with a new animated series. As reported by Variety, a Ghostbusters animated series is currently in development at Netflix with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan onboard as executive producers. Reitman and Kenan co-wrote Ghostbusters: Afterflife, with Reitman also directing the live-action film.
The project is seemingly very early in development as plot details are still unknown. It's unclear if this animated series will act as a follow-up to Ghostbusters: Afterlife which served as a sequel to Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II, or if it will exist as its own thing separate from the film timeline.
Assuming the project heads to series, this would be the third animated Ghostbusters show. The Real Ghostbusters was an animated spinoff series that continued the adventures of the original four Ghostbusters -- Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Egon Spengler, Dr. Ray Stantz, Winston Zeddemore -- as they investigated paranormal activity around the world. The series aired for 140 episodes from 1986 to 1991. It was followed by The Extreme Ghostbusters which featured a younger team of college-aged Ghostbusters led by Egon Spengler. The series aired for 40 episodes on the syndicated Bohbot Kids Network block in 1997.
No writer is currently attached to the current Ghostbusters animated project. Production will reportedly be handled by Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc., a division of Sony PIctures Entertainment's Columbia Pictures.
