The pandemic has seen an increase in the already burgeoning adult animation medium. What once seemed like a niche space reserved for shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and just about anything on Adult Swim has now spread onto every possible streaming platform available.
Rick and Morty is one of the reasons for all of these shows receiving the green light, with the series being one of the most popular shows, period, animated or not. This has led other adult animation to follow in its footsteps, thus creating shows like Solar Opposites and Central Park.
The last decade has seen a slow increase in the growth of the medium as shows like Bob's Burgers, Disenchantment, and Archer embraced adult animation. Now it almost seems as though there are more cartoons for adults than kids - with M.O.D.O.K., Invincible, Hit-Monkey, Love Death & Robots, Final Space, Tuca and Bertie, Bojack Horseman, Inside Job, Harley Quinn, and countless others filling out the ranks.
Now Amazon Prime Video, which found unmitigated success in Robert Kirkman's Invincible, has revealed imagery and the voice cast for their next adult animated series, Fairfax. The show premieres this month, and you can see some of the images below, along with quotes from the creatives behind the project.
"This show is a love letter to kids today – the generation that will most definitely save the world from global warming if they don't die from eating Tide Pods first," an announcement from creators Hausfater, Buchsbaum, and Riley stated.
"It's a modern look at the timeless struggle to be cooler than you are, to fit in while standing out, and what it feels like to wait in line for a pair of sneakers you're never going to cop. We're incredibly excited to be working with Serious Business, Somehoodlum, Pizzaslime, Titmouse, and Amazon Studios. We couldn't have asked for a better team."
Leading the voice cast are Jaboukie Young-White (The Daily Show), Peter S. Kim (Housebroken), Kiersey Clemons (The Flash), and Skyler Gizondo (Booksmart).
Albert Cheng, COO and Co-head of Television at Amazon Studios, also spoke about the new show, stating that "Fairfax is smart, weird, and hilarious, and we're excited to work with Matt, Aaron, Teddy and the teams at Serious Business and Titmouse so our Prime Video customers around the world can see this unique new series."
An incredible list of guest voices was also released, previewing some of the talents bringing the side characters to life in Fairfax. These include J.B. Smoove (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Ben Schwartz (Sonic the Hedgehog), Yvette Nicole Brown (Community), Billy Porter (Cinderella), John Leguizamo (Super Mario Bros.), Rob Delaney (Deadpool 2), Zoe Deutch (Zombieland: Double Tap), Jeff Bottoms (Alita: Battle Angel), Larry Owens (Hot White Heist), Pamela Adlon (King of the Hill), Colton Dunn (Key & Peele), Linda Park (Star Trek: Enterprise), Camila Mendes (Riverdale), and Tim Simons (Veep).
With an animation style reminiscent of other adult animated series like Duncanville or King of the Hill, Fairfax looks to be following the footsteps of its predecessors in the animation world. Of course, the powerful and experienced voice cast doesn't hurt matters either.
Are you guys excited for Fairfax, or are you waiting for more substantial previews to come before putting any eggs in this animated basket? Regardless of your thoughts on these images, be sure to share your take in the usual spot!
