Big Hero 6 is one of the most successful animated movies Disney has ever released, so we were quite surprised the company has barely done anything with the property outside of Big Hero 6: The Series.
Well, that is about to change as the company is preparing to launch a bunch of shorts based on the movie. The new short series is called Baymax Dreams, and fans should expect to see it on DisneyNow and the Disney YouTube channel come September 15.
We’re not sure how many episodes are planned, but we do know that each will be directed by no other than Simon J. Smith, and they’ll run up to three minutes in length.
In the new shorts, the robot, Baymax, is dreaming of electric sheep among other things. Hey, we’re not sure why Baymax is dreaming of weird things, but it sounds fun so who cares, right? To make things more interesting, the director is the man behind Bee Movie, Penguins of Madagascar and short Shrek 4D.
We should point out that Disney is working with Unity Technologies on this project. If you have no idea what Unity is, well, it’s a video game development tool that apparently can also be used to create a short animated series.
“Working in Unity is like having every department at your fingertips,” according to Smith. “The results of Unity’s parallel, nonlinear workflow and real-time rendering meant we were able to make Baymax Dreams in half the time — allowing us to spend the other half on experimentation and the creative process.”
Unity has evolved a lot over the years, but who would have thought then that it would improve so much to the point where Disney is interested in using it.
