Blade Runner: Black Lotus was announced back in 2018 and is set to premiere in 2021. It's a CG animated series based on the Blade Runner movie franchise — which began with Ridley Scott's seminal 1982 film and was continued by the acclaimed Blade Runner 2049 in 2017.
The series is a co-production between Crunchyroll and Adult Swim. It will air, dubbed in English on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block and be available to stream on Crunchyroll — come release next year. Sola Digital Arts produces; Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama will direct all thirteen episodes. Shinichirō Watanabe, the director of the Blade Runner Black Out 2022 animated short, serves as a creative producer.
Blade Runner: Black Lotus takes place in the year 2032, in the aftermath of the Blackout. The lead is a female replicant and it will feature "familiar" characters from the Blade Runner universe.
Jessica Henwick, best known for her role in Netflix's Iron First series and also set to star in Gozilla vs. Kong as well as The Matrix 4, recently participated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter regarding her involvement in the latter film. However, the outlet at one point asks Henwick whether she's gotten up to anything else during quarantine.
Henwick tells the site "I actually did a pretty big animated series, but I don’t think they’ve announced me yet. So I don’t know if I can say it, but I’m the lead in that and I’m excited for that to come out. It will be on Adult Swim in 2021, I believe." Now doesn't that sound awfully familiar?
While the actress doesn't namedrop the series; it seems pretty clear that she's referring to the Blade Runner series. Especially given what Henwick goes on to say about the project. "What can I say about this other new one? It’s based on a very big film that’s in the sci-fi world and was recently revisited. And they’re now venturing into the animated world. That is what I will say. (Laughs.) So I’m doing that and a couple of other voice gigs, but that’s the one that I’m really the most excited about."
