PEEPS: Animated Movie Based On Famed Marshmallow Easter Candy In Development From Wonder Street
Peeps candy is making its way from Easter baskets to the big screen as Wonder Street recently acquired the film and television rights to the marshmallow candies.
For a long time, Peeps candy has been associated with the Easter holiday. But over the years, the animal-shaped marshmallow candy has become sort of a mainstay in American pop culture.
Now, the delicious confectionary treat will be adapted into a movie. Deadline reports that Wonder Street has acquired the film and television rights to the marshmallow candy with plans to produce a feature described as being "in the spirit of Trolls-meets-Smurfs."
While still early in development, the feature will "follow a ragtag group of Peeps characters who set out on a cross-country journey in order to attend Peepsfest, an annual brand celebration in Pennsylvania." Bethlehem, Pennsylvania is where Peeps candy company Just Born Inc. is located.
David Goldblum is writing the script and producing alongside Christine and Mark Holder (The Mauritanian ) of Wonder Street.
“Peeps Chicks and Bunnies have been ingrained in American pop culture for nearly seven decades due to their instantly recognizable shapes and fan-favorite marshmallow taste, making them the perfect characters to bring to life on the big screen,” said Keith Domalewski, Director of Marketing & Consumer Engagement at Just Born. “We hope the new Peeps film spreads sweetness to families across the country and provides inspiration for fans to express their ‘Peepsonality’ in new ways.”
Peeps are most commonly shaped like bunnies or chicks but as the brand has expanded, so have the shapes of these delicious treats. It will be interesting to see how Peeps come to life on the big screen.
