Minecraft: The Movie, the upcoming full-length feature film based on the hit video game from 2009, will be released worldwide on March 4, 2022, Warner Bros. and developer Mojang have announced.

In the game, the player creates their own avatars and build complex structures using textured cubes in a 3D environment, so it comes as no surprise that the movie will differ from the game, as it will tell an actual story, focusing on "a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld."

As a reminder. Minecraft’s latest draft was written by Aaron and Adam Nee, the newly appointed directors of Sony’s Masters of the Universe adaptation. Minecraft: The Movie will be directed by Peter Sollett (The Village, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist), with Visual Effects Supervisor Jim Berney (Pacific Rim: Uprising, Aquaman) helping him in bringing the video game world to life on the movie screen.

Since its original release almost a decade ago, Minecraft sales have reached an all-time high with 144 million copies having been sold across all major platforms with over 74 million monthly players.
