It doesn't sound like LeBron James can count on his NBA buddies to help him out against the Monstars in Space Jam 2. At least he'll have the Looney Tunes by his side.

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers may not be playing playoff basketball, but this summer the NBA superstar will lace up and take the hard court in Space Jam 2. The problem is, he may not have superstars with him.

According to NBA reporter Brian Windhorst, LeBron James is reportedly having difficulty convincing fellow basketball stars to appear in the movie with him.

"He's been recruiting players to come and try and be in Space Jam with him this summer, and he hasn't been able to close some of those deals," Windhorst said on ESPN's The Jump. "Some of the top guys he wants to come with him to do the movie."

It's unclear why his fellow stars aren't joining him on his Hollywood adventure, though one of the co-hosts believes it would mean added pressure to play with him in L.A. as well. Windhorst added his own thoughts: "You put me in the movie where you're the start, I'm going to be the one you're dunking on."

While Windhorst may be an expert in all things LeBron James, it's pretty clear he never saw the original Space Jam. Michael Jordan never played against these NBA stars; rather, they had their powers sucked out of them by the Monstars, which is what made them so good at basketball.

Details regarding the plot of Space Jam 2 have been kept under wraps, but you have to figure any NBA star appearing in the movie would likely be on the same team as LeBron, and not against him.

What we do know about Space Jam 2 is that it's not being considered a sequel. LeBron James has also stated that the film is "so much bigger than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together," adding that there will be an empowering message to the movie.

Space Jam 2 is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2021, with filming expected to begin this summer. The movie is being directed by Terence Nance (Random Acts of Flyness) with Black Panther writer and director Ryan Coogler signed on as a producer.
